Weathercock. The name evokes flames and chaos, and a mythic hero who will one day change the world. Young Kinner - betrayed by those he loves and sentenced to die - knows only one thing: in a world where women hold all the power and men are nothing but property, heroes are hard to come by. Determined to create a life on his own terms, he flees execution only to discover he is ill-equipped for survival. Accustomed to relying on others for protection, he dreams of rescue by the Weathercock. What he gets instead is Rai and Banya, mercenary soldiers on the run from their determined (and increasingly psychotic) Commander Remeg. The last thing they need is to play nursemaid to a half-grown whelp, but a madwoman's dark secret soon ties their fates and treachery casts a dark wing over the travelers. Kinner must discover the bravery and skills to save not only himself, but also his friends. And what of Weathercock? Will someone who doesn't even exist appear when Kinner needs him most?
Reviews -
“… [a] unique work of fiction that will keep readers reading and guessing all the way through.” Margaret Lane, The Midwest Book Review
“… the questions this allegorical adventure tale raises are proactive and compelling. I admire the author for tackling this territory and think she has written an original, idea-driven adventure story …” Janelle Elyse Kihlstrom, melusineblog.blogspot.com
“… well-written, well-presented, and blissfully original.” John Valeri, Hartford Books Examiner
“… a miraculous and totally original tale full of quick wit, exciting battles, and characters we love and love to hate … enough action to satisfy any literary thrill seeker, and a thoughtful, precise narrative.” Dan Forward, mysecretboston.com
“… sympathetic and believable characters … The climax was both surprising and satisfying, and was delivered with the precision and flare of a gifted writer.” Jim Mastro, The Talisman of Elam and Antarctica: A Year at the Bottom of the World
